We’re keeping our distance to keep you safer during Coquitlam RCMP investigations

Coquitlam RCMP is still investigating every crime that is reported to us, but to keep you and our officers as safe as possible, we’re adjusting the way we respond to some crimes during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Social distancing is a responsibility for everyone, including emergency responders, says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with Coquitlam RCMP. We’re minimizing personal contact for things like property crimes. Our officers are screening for signs and symptoms of Covid-19, talking to you more on the phone, and you’ll see us using more Personal Protective Equipment like gloves, masks and safety glasses.

For all crimes against a person, such as assault or robbery, a police officer will still have to attend in person. Whether a police officer attends for other issues, such as a report of property crime, will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

We might ask you to speak to us outside or find different ways of getting your statement instead of coming to the police detachment, says Corporal McLaughlin. And as this pandemic goes on, we’re going to keep adjusting our methods based on the science and direction given by our public health authorities.

As always, emergencies or crimes in progress should be reported to 911 immediately. To report a property crime, or for less urgent but still important police matters, Coquitlam RCMP’s non-emergency number is always open at 604-945-1550.
